Faux Gaeilgeoirí

From An Gaeilgeoir, Feabhra 2000

As far as we know, none of the famous historical (and sometimes fictional) characters listed below spoke Irish. We are confident, however, that they all wished that they did, and we congratulate them on earning their places in history in spite of this significant personal shortcoming.

To help them out, we have translated a famous quote, for each of the names on the list, into Irish. Quote are listed on the right, but, of course, out of order.

Can you match the Irish quote with the person who would have said it?

Person Quote
1. Abraham Lincoln A. Amach leat! Amach, a bhall damanta!
2. Greta Garbo B. Agus do mhaidrín beag, freisin!
3. Julius Caesar C. Codladh, agus brionglóid a dhéanamh, b'fhéidir.
4. Lady MacBeth D. Dáirire, a mhuirnín, is cuma sa diabhal liom.
5. Marie Antoinette E. Ní caimiléir mise.
6. Rhett Butler F. Seacht mbliana agus ceithre scóir ó shin . . .
7. Richard Nixon G. Itheadh siad cáca!
8. Wicked Witch of the West H. Níl tada agam ach fuil, saothar, deora agus allas le tairiscint daoibh.
9. William Shakespeare I. Tá mé ag iarraidh a bheith liom féin.
10. Winston Churchill J. Tháinig mé, chonaic mé, bhuaigh mé.
